THE DANCER UPSTAIRS / Passos de Baile (2002)
Directed by John Malkovich based on the Nicholas Shakespeare
novel.
John Malkovich, who loves Portugal for some time, was
looking for a place to film his first movie. Trying to
capture the look and feeling of latin america scenario, like
Peru. It was not an easy task. John and art director Pierre-François Limbosch
spent one sunny Sunday trying to spot the right location for
Passos de Baile. When they were almost giving up, I
suggested Espinho, a small town south Oporto, near the beach,
developed in early 1900's.
John Malkovich loved the city, its paralel streets named
with numbers and even forgot the lack of palm trees that
was looking foward to find. Street 19 was choosen.
Photos shown from filmings in other places in Oporto.
